China Seismic Experimental Site (CSES) dedicates to the multidisciplinary research on the mechanism of continental earthquakes and reduction of seismic disaster risk. This scientific goal, as well as the roadmap to achieve this goal, is characterized by system science nature and requires a system science perspective. This article reviews CSES as a system from its early version to the present form, discussing on some critical concepts related to the design, planning, maintenance, and upgrading of this natural laboratory.
