Abstract

Planning, design, and management of hydraulic structures such as barrages, dams, spillways, and bridges all need estimation of Peak Flood Discharge for a desired return time. The findings of a research, examining the frequency of Pohru river floods using the Gumbel’s distribution and Log Pearson type III approaches, widely used models in hydrological studies for the probability distribution to simulate stream flows, are presented in this work. For a period of two decades, the approach has been used to predict the yearly maximum discharge of the river from (1998 to 2018). The analysis also reveals that the observed and anticipated peak discharges of the Log Pearson type III (LP3) and Gumble (EV1) models have a positive correlation (R2 = 0.71) and (R2 = 0.52). As a result, the best-fit models for modeling and flood frequency analysis of yearly peak flows on the Pohru River are the LP3 and G(EV1). Peak flood values for 2, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 200, and 500 year return periods were also determined using the same approach, which might be valuable for flood management in the area.
