Prof. Harsh K. Gupta elected as a Foreign Member of Russian Academy of Sciences

The Russian Academy of Sciences, established in 1774, is the highest scientific institution in Russia. According to its Charter, “only the most prominent foreign scientists recognised by the international scientific community can be elected foreign member”. In June 2022, Prof. Harsh K. Gupta is elected as a Foreign Member of the Academy for his outstanding contributions in the field of Earth Sciences. Prof. Harsh Gupta is recognised by the Academy as an “outstanding scientist who first determined the thickness of the Earth’s crust under the Himalaya, developed a methodology that distinguishes induced earthquakes from tectonic ones, and proposed procedures for assessing the potential of earthquakes”. He is the first geoscientist to be elected as a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences from India.
